Demystifying DMARDS: Basics of Biologic and Nonbiologic Therapy in Rheumatology

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the top treatment agents for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, and ankylosing spondylitis
  • Discuss goals of treatment in rheumatology
  • Review pharmacokinetics, metabolism, excretion, mechanism for action, and contraindications for nonbiologic DMARDS, TNF inhibitors, JAK inhibitors, T cell inhibitors, B cell inhibitor, IL 17 inhibitors, IL 6 inhibitors, IL 23 inhibitors, PDE4 inhibitor
  • Review common side effects and ways to manage or determine severity of side effects
  • Compare and contrast biologic therapy options based on patient co-morbid conditions and medical history

Speaker Biography:

Riddhi Patel Pa CRiddhi Patel is a physician assistant practicing in rheumatology at Columbus Arthritis Center. She attended Ohio State University for a bachelor's degree in neuroscience and the physician assistant program at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she now guest lectures for their autoimmune disease segment. Riddhi has been working with autoimmune and joint disease since 2018. She finds it rewarding to explain complex medical conditions to patients and enjoys helping patients feel comfortable with immunosuppressant therapy. She also enjoys reading, gardening, traveling, and exploring new spots in Columbus with her husband and their dog.
