Innovative Uses of Local Anesthetics

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the various use cases for nerve blocks and/or trigger point injections to relieve migraines, back pain, sciatica, pyriformis syndrome, relieve chest wall pain from rib fractures, pleuritic pain, shingles, and more.
  • Discuss the use of preparations containing topical antibiotics for burns, diaper rash, and other painful skin conditions
  • Explore the use of dental blocks and topical preparations to relieve dental pain.

Paul Amiott HeadshotPaul M. Amiott, PA-C, EMT-P has practiced emergency medicine for approximately 11 years, the last 6 providing solo overnight ED coverage with a physician on call in rural critical access hospitals in Arizona, Colorado, and Indiana. He has also worked in emergency departments at trauma centers and community hospitals in Ohio. Mr. Amiott received his MPAS and holds Ohio certifications as a professional firefighter, paramedic, and EMS instructor. His professional interests include pain control techniques that do not require opiates and management of psychiatric emergencies, especially violent and/or combative patients. Mr. Amiott is a member of the board of directors for the Society of Emergency Medicine PA's.
