President-Elect

Madeline Meyers, PA-C, DMSc
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center

Madeline Meyers HeadshotMy name is Madeline Meyers. I am a Physician Assistant at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio in the Department of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery. I have been practicing clinically for the past six years with a dual role on the inpatient telemetry floor and as a first assistant in the operating room. I graduated with my Master of Physician Assistant Studies Degree in July of 2018 from Kettering College and completed my Doctorate of Medical Science Degree in June of 2021 from A.T. Still University with a concentration in leadership. Throughout my professional career, I have had the opportunity to give back to the PA profession by precepting 34 PA students through their inpatient surgical subspecialty rotations and have led mock interviews for many second-year clinical students who are applying for their first jobs. I have also had the opportunity to serve the Ohio Association of Physician Assistants as a member of the pharmacology conference planning committee, the chairperson of the annual conference committee, and a member of the awards and scholarships committee. Furthermore, I have given back to my local community by volunteering at MedWish and the Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

The aspect of OAPA’s mission that resonates most with me is to provide exceptional resources for the personal and professional development of Ohio PAs. With over 6,000 PAs and 17 PA programs across Ohio, my goal is for OAPA to be the leading resource for Ohio PAs, PA students, and pre-PA students where educational opportunities are tailored to the practice specialties and work settings most applicable to our association’s members. Continued education is the foundation to promoting quality, accessible, and cost-effective patient care, so it must be prioritized for PAs to practice at the top of their licenses. One of the first ways OAPA can be the top resource for PA education is through targeted advertising and marketing to provide practice-based, relevant knowledge to our membership while showcasing the organization's leading presence in legislative initiatives. Another way for OAPA to be the top resource for PA education is by grassroots involvement of OAPA members, who are armed with data from OAPA leadership, to share the high-quality CME opportunities and industry-sponsored events with their colleagues. It is also important to strengthen relationships with PA programs to offer applicable, cutting-edge educational content for faculty and students at events like the annual conference.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I am interested to serve as President-Elect because I am passionate about the mission of OAPA and believe my skills and experience can help elevate the PA profession in Ohio. My vision is that OAPA continues to pave the way as the leader in advocating for the needs of Ohio PAs, while also providing the resources and support necessary for personal and professional growth. As President-Elect, my focus will be on fostering collaboration, enhancing member engagement, and driving initiatives that align with OAPA’s core values. Additionally, I am committed to bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table to ensure OAPA remains adaptable and forward-thinking in a constantly evolving healthcare landscape. Some of the specific skills I will bring to the table are my passion for teaching, dedication to mentoring new PAs, and commitment to continuous learning. I am also very organized and detail-oriented. I believe these skills will serve me well as President-Elect since I would be responsible for developing and helping to maintain a balanced annual budget for OAPA. The same skills will also allow me to successfully partner with the President to learn the responsibilities of the role and assume the Presidency the following year.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

Through previous volunteer positions and leadership roles, I have gained many transferable skills that would be relevant as OAPA President-Elect. For example, I had the opportunity to practice my public speaking skills as a moderator, presenter, and committee chair at my local hospital and OAPA continuing medical education conferences over the past five years. In preparation for these events, I had the chance to preside over committee meetings, prepare meeting agendas, and appoint committee members to assigned roles that align with their individual strengths. In addition, I have been a track chair for the 2025 American Academy of PAs in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery annual conference, a PA Foundation scholarship reviewer, an AAPA CME speaker reviewer for the 2021-2025 national conferences, and an NCCPA volunteer to update the blueprint for the cardiovascular and thoracic surgery certificate of added qualifications exam. I have also served as a clinical researcher where I gathered data, generated spreadsheets, and performed a statistical analysis of the data. These opportunities have strengthened my ability to seamlessly manage multiple projects, communicate clearly with all members on a high-functioning team, make effective and efficient decisions, and advanced my long-range planning skills that will be essential as OAPA President-Elect.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

The very beginning of OAPA’s mission is the part which resonates most with me, “Remove obstacles and provide resources for the personal and professional development of Ohio PAs…” In my current leadership role within my organization, this is something I am continuously working on to effect important changes and break down barriers so that my team and all other PAs at the organization can practice at the top of our licenses and provide patient-centered, high quality care.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I am interested in serving as the Vice President of the Ohio Association of Physician Assistants because I am deeply committed to advancing the physician assistant profession and advocating for the value we bring to healthcare. With six years of experience, including five years in Trauma and Acute Care General Surgery, I understand the importance of leadership and collaboration in improving patient care. In my leadership role I have seen the value of having a strong voice in policy and leadership decisions, and I am eager to contribute to OAPA’s mission of supporting PAs in Ohio. My role in educating students of the as a preceptor for the University of Toledo PA Program has further fueled my commitment to professional development and mentorship. I am excited about the opportunity to advocate for educational initiatives, foster networking, and help shape policies that benefit PAs and the patients we serve. I am confident that my clinical experience, leadership skills, and passion for advancing the PA profession will allow me to make a meaningful contribution in this role. I look forward to collaborating with fellow leaders to elevate our profession and make a broader impact on healthcare in Ohio.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

In my current leadership role, I have over three years of experience leading a team and effectively advocating for important changes related to PAs at my organization. Notably, I recently led the initiative to revise procedure privileges for PAs to include bedside procedures such as surgical chest tubes and femoral arterial lines, which had previously been excluded from the scope of PA practice within my organization. Through strategic networking, I have earned opportunities to sit on key hospital committees, such as the Peer Review Committee and the Credentialing Committee, where I have acted as a strong advocate and voice for PAs within my organization.

Lynn Pagliaccio, PA-C
Cleveland Clinic

Lynn PagliaccioI am a longstanding member of the OAPA and have served in various roles within our organization, including Delegate—Region 1 and past president. I am a new member of the GAC as and am also active in the OAPA HOD. I have practiced clinically at Cleveland Clinic for more than 30 years.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

Removing obstacles to professional practice in Ohio resonates with me the most. I have a fond appreciation for advocacy and have attended two National Advocacy Days in Washington over the last several years. I am painfully aware that sometimes, it takes years to pass legislation on a national level. For example, we have been fighting to change legislation allowing PAs and NPs to maintain relationships with their diabetic patients. Unfortunately, once patients are identified as requiring diabetic shoes, they must follow solely with a physician per Medicare requirements. This has been an ongoing fight for more than 3 years. I can't wait to head to Washington again in the Fall to push this agenda by meeting with our state senators and representatives. I also have plans to attend our State Advocacy Day later this year.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I have promoted Physician Assistants' top of competency practice for more than 20 years. Our work is not quite done. I would be honored to contribute to this great work.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

I have had previous experience on the board. I have a decent knowledge of our governing bylaws and believe that my past experience would lend itself well to this position. I feel confident in performing duties as outlined by the President.

Kelly Stiffler, PA-C
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center

I have been a physician assistant for the past 15 years. I started my career in internal medicine as a hospitalist, then moved to upstate New York and worked as an outpatient family practice physician assistant and at a school-based clinic. Then my husband and I moved back to Ohio and I started working at Dayton Children’s emergency room. I did not know that Pediatric emergency medicine was going to be something that I loved. However, I completely fell in love with the job. We initially started with two physician assistants and now we have 18 full-time PAs, three PRN PAs, and six full-time nurse practitioners. I also helped develop an advanced practice provider leadership role in the Emergency room becoming the supervising APP. This model was then mirrored for other departments in the hospital. I’ve helped to grow education about physician assistant’s knowledge, base and scope of practice to both Cincinnati children’s and nationwide children’s. Both of which have started hiring physician assistance in the emergency room. I would love to become more involved in our board in Ohio. I think it’s important to continue to keep our profession moving forward.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

I’m very connected to the mission of OAPA. I think it’s important that we continue to improve the quality and scope of our physician assistance. I think it’s important that we continue to improve education and expectations for our PAs here in Ohio. I also think that it is important that we continue to expand physician assistants’ leadership roles in local hospitals. It’s important that we have a voice amongst our fellow providers.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I’m interested in joining this as a leadership role because I think it’s important for our role as physician assistants to continue growing. I am very excited to be a part of such a great team. I can’t wait to help continuing to grow the number of members that are getting involved in Ohio. I’m excited for some hopeful legislation changes.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

My work experience as a leader at children’s over the last nine years will be especially helpful in serving the OAPA. I’m an excellent communicator and I’m a hard worker. I am always trying to expand our physician, assistant knowledge and growth.

Region 1 Director

Jay Mihalek, PA-C
Cleveland Clinic

Jay Mihalek HeadshotPhysician assistant with over 8 years of experience in Hospital Medicine. Current Main Campus Hospital Medicine APP Manager at Cleveland Clinic with over 5 years of leadership experience. Active involvement in numerous committees and quality improvement initiatives. Current co-activity director for Hospital Medicine SQPE Forum and Hospital Medicine Peer Learning.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

The beginning of the mission statement, "Remove obstacles and provide resources for the personal and professional development of Ohio PAs," most resonates with me. Obstacles that limit the ability of PAs to practice to the degree of their training limits access to care for patients and decreases the effectiveness of our healthcare system. Additionally, I am a proponent of ongoing development for all PAs to enhance clinical knowledge and to prepare for positions in leadership, education, research or other areas of interest in order to widely impact organizations.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I have always been interested in advocacy for the PA profession. I strongly believe that PAs provide excellent, efficient clinical care which can be limited by unnecessary regulations at both the state and institutional levels. Serving as Region 1 Directory will allow me to be more actively involved with OAPA and have an increased impact for more Ohio PAs.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

I am currently the Hospital Medicine APP Manager Main Campus at Cleveland Clinic. I also am on the Chagrin Falls Booster Board.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

OAPA’s mission focuses on professional growth, personal excellence, and recognition of PAs in Ohio. These qualities are equally important, however, with the continued growth of the profession I currently resonate most with advocacy for continued development of PAs. When you become a PA, you sign up for a lifetime of advocating for our title, what exactly we do and how we function. It’s a profession that is highly regarded and difficult to achieve, yet sometimes very misunderstood.

OAPA Regional Directors play a heavy role in education, networking, and advocating for the PA profession. I am currently at a place in my Cardiothoracic Surgery career where it is imperative for me to develop my leadership skills by working alongside my colleagues to embrace out of the box thinking, encourage practice changes, and light the way for growth in this profession.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

When undergoing my Doctorate, I also completed additional courses to earn a certification in Healthcare Administration and Management to prepare me for more leadership roles. Throughout my career, I have been deeply committed to mentorship, consistently precepting students and supporting early career physician assistants as they transition into clinical practice. Currently, I serve in dual professional roles: practicing clinically in emergency medicine with my academic responsibilities as an Assistant Professor at Baldwin Wallace University Physician Assistant program. Since joining PA education in 2021, I have been committed to translating my real-world clinical experience into meaningful learning opportunities for students. My career reflects a dedication to clinical excellence, patient-centered care, and the advancement of the physician assistant profession through both practice and education.

The commitment to eliminating barriers while fostering professional growth and advancing high-quality, accessible healthcare mirrors my own professional philosophy. As an Assistant Professor at Baldwin Wallace University's PA program, I see daily how crucial professional development is for emerging healthcare providers. I am particularly passionate about increasing OAPA membership and involvement, believing that a stronger collective voice amplifies our ability to advocate for the profession. By building public awareness of PAs' contributions to healthcare, we not only advance our professional standing but also improve patient access to quality care. My experience in both clinical practice and academia provides me with a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting our profession from multiple angles. I am passionate about supporting our state society's mission and ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness. By increasing membership, encouraging active involvement, and raising public awareness of our profession, I believe we can strengthen our collective voice and enhance the PA profession throughout Ohio.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

My experience both clinically and in PA education have equipped me with diverse clinical perspectives that allow me to understand and represent the varied needs of our profession as well as honed skills directly applicable to OAPA service. Academia has taught me to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously—balancing teaching, advising, committee work, and clinical practice while meeting critical deadlines. I regularly organize and develop content for presentations, lectures, and workshops, ensuring information is clear, relevant, and engaging for diverse audiences. Communication is central to my daily work, whether explaining complex concepts to students, collaborating with faculty colleagues, or corresponding with clinical partners. The OAPA mission aspect that most resonates with me is advancing the PA profession through legislation, community building, and career promotion. This directly impacts our ability to provide quality, cost-effective, and accessible healthcare. Strong legislative advocacy gives PAs the best chance to practice to our full potential. This benefits patients across Ohio. Community building fosters a supportive network to enhancing our professional and personal development from PA-S through retirement. Ultimately, advancing the PA role through these avenues directly translates to better patient care and a thriving PA community.

I’m seeking re-election as OAPA Region 6 Director, a role I've held for almost two years. This position allows me to work directly with local PAs. Region 7 Director

Christopher Howell, DSc, PA-C
Miami University

Christopher Howell HeadshotChristopher Howell is an Associate Professor and Program Director for the Physician Associate Studies program, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has held several positions in clinical practice, education and leadership over more than twenty years in healthcare. During his time in the military, he had the privilege of being a site director for clinical placement and education for physician assistant education, adjunct clinical professor, and healthcare administrator. Following his Emergency Medicine fellowship, he began to focus more on emergency medicine and critical care, point-of-care ultrasound, clinical research, and PA education. Following retirement from military service, he received an appointment as an Associate Professor at a graduate physician assistant studies program in Dayton, Ohio. In that capacity he emphasized education in critical care, emergency medicine, addiction and developing research programs. He remained in that role until his appointment as Program Director at Miami University, a privilege he’s had since 2020. When not working academically, he continues to Practice in Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

I have had the privilege of working for the Department of Defense, while a service member in United States Air Force. During this time, I have had the honor of serving with exceptional clinician leaders and healthcare team members, who were able to maximize resources to provide exceptional care to all patients, families and communities. During my formative years of healthcare training, the clinical practices I served in established incredible training platforms, exercised continued process improvement strategies to expand healthcare delivery, while advocating for fiscal stewardship and responsibility. My experience in the service taught me much about how essential clinical knowledge and team dynamics is to patient centered medical care, but also how vital understanding the business of healthcare is in preserving the infrastructure needed to provide sustainable care to patients and communities. The service has trained and used the PA profession in ways that would serve all communities- as a means to promote quality, accessible and cost-effective patient care. The contemporary challenges facing healthcare require expanding privileges for all healthcare professionals. Yet, the profession has to preserve a reliable and responsible brand of professional growth and excellence, if Ohio families are to receive incredible care.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I have worked in several institutions and disciplines, including Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and Drug Rehabilitation. I have been blessed to work with exceptional clinical teams, caring for many of Ohio’s diverse communities. Through these years of clinical practice, I have observed progress in addressing the challenges facing both the healthcare providers and their patients. We have seen unconventional practice models and expanded privileges for PAs. Yet, more progress is needed to ensure healthcare services may be provided to all Ohio families, using the exceptional skills already seen offered by PA’s in industry. I have worked with colleagues in education, including many PD’s, who work tirelessly to provide an incredible education to future healthcare leaders. They are hopeful that graduates will enter industry not only well trained, but not risking that their talent and skills will be underused. The demands of industry are being met with a curriculum that matches the intensity and vigor required to provide exceptional care. We hope they receive the privileges and professional respect that is due the investment. I hope to continue working with OAPA to support our region 7 community with educational opportunities and community engagement that works toward accomplishing that shared aim.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

Currently, I serve in a few volunteer roles, including: in providing mentorship in research with students within the Physician Associate Studies Program; providing mentorship for aspiring healthcare professionals (in several fields); work with several institutional teams for product development and planning; and have privileges as a volunteer in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine. In these roles, I have had the opportunity to work with novice and established professionals in several disciplines, with a myriad of talent and interests that could be brought together to serve OAPA.

AAPA Delegate

Leah Barmasse, PA-C
Saint John Medical Center

This summer will mark my 30th year as a PA. For most of that time, I’ve worked in surgical sub specialties, including surgical assisting, surgical house officer, trauma, sports medicine, and orthopedics. I have always felt that as PAs, we should have a seat at decision-making tables, to help guide our young profession. Early on, I had the privilege of serving on the OAPA board for several years as the secretary. During that time, I also had the pleasure of representing Ohio as a delegate to the APAA House of Delegates . Over the years I have been a preceptor for PA students, hosted future PAs for shadowing, petitioned the OSMB to update the PA formulary, as well as helped teach suture workshops at AAPA national conferences. Additionally, I’ve served on numerous hospital committees. After taking time off to concentrate on my family, I now feel the call to get involved again to represent Ohio PAs in the AA PA House of Delegates.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

As a potential Ohio delegate, all of the components of the OAPA mission resonate equally to me. Some of the goals of the House of Delegates (and by extension AAPA) include removing barriers to practice, strengthening practice teams, improving PA laws, and fostering liaisons with other medical providers as well as medical entities. These objectives have helped create an environment in which PAs can thrive, and indeed, excel in their practices. This, in turn, sets the stage for quality, cost-efficient patient care. I am grateful that I no longer have to explain what a PA is, but instead, can focus my energy on pursuing the best possible outcome for my patients. With this mindset coupled with my past experience, I feel ready to step into the role of Ohio Delegate.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

First and foremost, I intend to be the voice of Ohio PA’s. It is my intent to support strategic dialogue on behalf of Ohio PAs, as well as commit to continue to forge connections between other healthcare providers and entities. During my previous years as Ohio delegate, I made it a point to speak with delegates from other states. In doing this, common issues came to light and occasionally solutions became clear. These types of conversations as well as presenting and discussing issues important to Ohio’s PAs will be my main focus.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

As an ortho PA as well as a food bank volunteer, I’ve had the good fortune to have the time to speak with the number of people through the years. Too often, they voice frustrations regarding access to healthcare, rising healthcare costs, and their ongoing woes with their health insurance. These conversations have energized me to step up and be their voice, to endeavor to make a change to the best of my ability. I’m optimistic that positive change, although challenging, is possible.

I recently earned a second Master's Degree in Health Administration from Ohio University. My clinical career has included work as an athletic trainer, physician assistant (PA), and PA educator and administrator. As an athletic trainer (AT), I worked with a physical therapy company where I provided rehabilitation services in an outpatient clinical setting, and also AT services to a local school district, covering all sports teams from middle school to high school. After completing my PA training, I worked in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for many years before transitioning to academia, where I continue to serve as the Ohio University Department of PA Practice Department Chair, Program Director, and Associate Clinical Professor. Through this administrative role, I have not only advanced my administrative skills, but I have also gained extensive experience in mentorship, department and organizational leadership, and advocacy.

What aspect of OAPA's mission most resonates with you?

There are several aspects of the OAPA mission that resonate with me including the organization’s commitment to advocacy and professional leadership development, and clinician support. I am extremely passionate about removing practice barriers so that PAs in Ohio can practice medicine at the top of their education, training, and licensure and be recognized for the work that we are capable of doing. Given advocacy and legislative changes that OAPA has successfully navigated over the years, and continues to do, it fuels my passion for advocacy work. I also appreciate the sense of community within the organization's leadership and members. Providing opportunities and spaces for PAs to gather to learn, collaborate, share ideas, and have robust conversations about patient care and practice issues creates a sense of unity and motivation.

Why are you interested in serving in this specific leadership position?

I am seeking a delegate position so that I may continue to contribute to the work that is being done by AAPA Governance and the House of Delegates. As medicine and PA practice continue to evolve, it is essential for the AAPA governing body to stay informed and adapt policies and procedures to best serve its members. I am committed to collaborating with PA colleagues and leaders across the profession to shape policies that drive progress and support our profession’s future.

What work or volunteer experience(s) do you have that will be helpful to OAPA service?

As a longstanding OAPA and AAPA member, a practicing clinician and educator, an advocate of the profession, and serving in many volunteer leadership roles within the OAPA, AAPA, and PAEA, I bring the skills and passion needed to volunteer in this service role. As an example, I have been a delegate since 2017 and have represented our membership in the House of Delegates during the deliberation over Optimal Team Practice, Title Change, and many other “hot-topic” policy-forming discussions that shape AAPA. As the current Chief Delegate, I am responsible for organizing and conducting delegate meetings, communicating with the Board of Directors regarding the work that our delegation is doing, and will soon be preparing for the House of Delegates in May by reviewing proposed resolutions and white papers. In addition to these responsibilities, I am most proud to mentor our new delegate and support all of our delegation. Collectively, all my current and past volunteer experiences, including Chief Delegate, Delegate, President, Vice President, Region 4 Representative, and committee memberships, have prepared me to continue as an Ohio Delegate.
