Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases in Ohio
Presented by Leeanne Garrett, MPH-VPH & Lynn Denny, MPH, Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Infectious Diseases in the Zoonotic Disease Program
Learning Objectives:
- Name the tick-borne diseases of concern in Ohio, along with their associated signs and symptoms.
- Identify how to properly remove an embedded tick from a patient, and the recommended course of action following a tick bite.
- State the laboratory diagnostic criteria and reporting requirements for patients with a suspected tick-borne disease.
Speaker Biographies:
Leeanne Garrett is a Public Health Entomologist at the Ohio Department of Health. She began working in the Bureau of Infectious Diseases Zoonotic Disease Program in 2015 and is currently the coordinator for tick and mosquito surveillance programs across Ohio. Ms. Garrett earned her Master’s degree in Veterinary Public Health from the Ohio State University, and she serves on the board of the Ohio Mosquito and Vector Control Association.
Lynn Denny is an Epidemiologist at the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Infectious Diseases in the Zoonotic Disease Program. She has a Master’s degree in Public Health from The Ohio State University. Lynn started her work at the Ohio Department of Health in 2006. She is currently the lead epidemiologist for tick-borne disease surveillance.
